A procession of flourishing chilli plants marched out of the Willunga Recreation Park over the weekend (19 and 20 February) as chilli enthusiasts from near and far converged for the annual Chilli Fest Willunga.

Organisers say approximately 2500 people came through the gates to taste, shop and learn more about the ubiquitous chilli, with cooking demonstrations from the experts showing easy dishes to showcase their products. Gardening superhero Sophie Thompson shared her extensive knowledge and experience to encourage home gardeners to make the most of this cooling autumn weather and keep their chilli plants thriving. 

Willunga Farmers Market favourites, Whites Valley Jalapeños, were joined by fourteen other chilli specialists selling everything from Belgian chocolate to Korean Kimchi and enough hot sauces to raise a sweat in anyone’s language. First timers at Chilli Fest Willunga and new business, Salt Gang came down from Balhannah where they make their Asian inspired chilli products. Thomas and Lucy said they had a great festival and definitely will be back again next year.

Always a bright spark at the festival was Taras from Grund’s Gourmet. Attending now for a third year in a row with his wide range of sauces, chutneys & relishes.  Taras says ‘Fantastic weekend, great atmosphere and plenty of people all having a great time’

Chilli Fest moved outdoors this year, allowing vendors and crowds to spread out under the shady Recreation Park trees, to soak up the atmosphere, food and live music.

The event organisers would like to thank their large number of volunteers. Members of sporting clubs staff the gates and other hard workers manage recycling, set up and pack up and sell raffles, drinks and even chillies, making this another successful community fundraising event.
