National Volunteer Week starts today, 20 May, providing an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the generous contributions of volunteers across Australia.
In the City of Victor Harbor, around one in four residents volunteer in some capacity.
The council says it is fortunate to have hundreds of hard-working volunteers, who assist with the delivery of important programs, projects and services.
They come from all walks of life – retirees, business people, community leaders and students.
City of Victor Harbor Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins wants to thank all volunteers in Victor Harbor who generously offer their time.
“Whether you’re assisting tourists in our Visitor Centre, planting trees and caring for our environment, transporting vulnerable individuals in the community, or something else entirely, the work you do as a volunteer is invaluable.
“Victor Harbor wouldn’t be what it is today without your work,” she says.
“If you’ve ever thought about volunteering before but haven’t taken the plunge, now is a great time to put your hand up.
“We’re currently recruiting for a number of volunteer positions at Council, and it’s a great way to keep connected in the local community.”
Volunteering is an opportunity to stay social, help others, gain valuable experience, share skills and make new friends.
Current volunteering vacancies are available with the council’s Caring Neighbourhood Program, Southern Communities Transport Scheme, Visitor Centre and Fleurieu Families.
Each volunteering role is unique and can be flexible according to the individual’s availability, skills and interests.
Council staff can work with community members to find a volunteer role that is the perfect fit.
