A spate of graffiti attacks across Goolwa and Port Elliot has prompted Alexandrina Council CEO Nigel Morris to publish an open letter to the vandal.
The graffti messaging, using offensive language aimed at the council, is in toilets at Goolwa Wharf, Goolwa Railway Station, Lakala Reserve in Port Elliot, the Rose Gardens in Goolwa and at Richard Ballard reserve.
In his letter Mr Morris expresses his extreme disappointment at the defacement and damage caused across the district.
“It is clear you are attempting to send a message to Council but the hurt you may want Council to experience is also experienced by community, business and visitors to our beautiful region.”
He says the clean-up diverts council resources away from other core services and affects the community that pays for these services through their council rates.
Mr Morris points out that the Goolwa Railway toilets are not even council-owned, meaning the burden of clean-up is borne by a volunteer group.
He implores the vandal to think about the consequences of their actions, its impact on the community, on visitors and local businesses affected.
“If there is something that is troubling you and you want Council to pay attention to your needs or suggestions, I invite you to have the courage and come and meet with me to explain what change you would like to see.
“Let’s have an honest and robust discussion (without the colourful language) instead of continuing the suffering you are causing others.”
Mr Morris says that as the dad of a young family he is appalled at the offensive language inflicted on an unsuspecting public who use the toilets.
