Alexandrina names Australia Day award winnersChristmas Where The Angas Flows is the 2024 Alexandrina Community Event of the Year for Strathalbyn and surrounding areas.

Alexandrina Council has announced its 2024 Australia Day Award recipients, who will be celebrated at ceremonies In Goolwa and Strathalbyn on Friday 26 January.


These awards publicly honour those who serve the community and make Alexandrina a better place.


Awards for Strathalbyn and surrounding areas will go to:

  • Citizen of the Year 2024 - Graham Brook, of Strathalbyn, for his tireless work for the Strathalbyn Polo & Recreation Grounds.


  • Young Citizen of the Year 2024 - Rhys Everett, recognising his commitment to helping the community and his volunteering efforts with the Strathalbyn unit of the South Australian State Emergency Service (SES).


  • Community Event of the Year 2024 - Christmas Where The Angas Flows.


  • Active Citizenship 2024 - Helen Stacey Bunton, of Strathalbyn, for her significant contribution to her community and charitable programs.


  • Mayor’s Community Service Award - Stephen Blewett for his community service through tennis, and the Strathalbyn Oval Controlling Committee.


Awards for Goolwa and surrounding areas will go to:

  • Citizen of the Year 2024 - Steve Kettle, of Nangkita, recognising his more than 35 years of service to the community of Mount Compass and district.


  • Young Citizen of the Year 2024 - William Piper-Bamber, of Chiton, for his commitment to surf lifesaving and the Chiton Rocks Surf Life Saving Club.


  • Community Event of the Year 2024 - the Southern Agricultural Society Inc – Port Elliot Show.


  • Active Citizenship 2024 - Chris Osborne, of Goolwa, who has been a volunteer with the South Australian Ambulance Service at the Goolwa Station for nearly 25 years.


  • Mayor’s Community Service Award - Little Scotland Gardening Group.


Mayor Keith Parkes congratulates all award recipients and thanks them for their contribution to the community.


“The Australia Day Awards are an opportunity to publicly acknowledge those unsung heroes and hardworking community groups in our community who

contribute their time and talents towards making Alexandrina a vibrant and inclusive place to live,” Mayor Parkes says.


“I would like to encourage everyone in our community to attend one of our Australia Day events to extend your thanks and appreciation to our award

recipients, and to celebrate our community.”


The awards presentations will be held on Friday 26 January in Strathalbyn at 9am and at 11 am in Goolwa.
