Alexandrina Council has started work on upgrading the weir wall in Strathalbyn’s Soldiers' Memorial Gardens.
The remediation site is along the Angus River just east of the Strathalbyn Swimming Centre.
Works include the removal of the existing retaining wall and construction of a replacement gabion retaining wall of wire cages filled with rocks.
The council says the gabion wall will not only provide essential erosion control for the riverside escarpment but also mirror the successful gabion wall recently completed behind the Strathalbyn Swimming Pool.
It says this method of erosion control is environmentally sustainable and has already been successfully used along the existing riverbank.
The reserve will remain accessible to pedestrians with restricted access fenced during the mobilisation of project works.
Project works are expected to be completed mid-August.
