The Alexandrina Council will commemorate the 20th anniversary of its apology to the Ngarrindjeri people next Saturday 9 December.
The event, to be held in Goolwa’s Jekejere Park, also celebrates the signing of the Kungun Ngarrindjeri Yunnan (KNY) Agreement.
The agreement was made on 8 October 2002 between Alexandrina Council with the Ngarrindjeri Nation.
It includes a series of commitments to work together and offered a sincere expression of sorrow and apology to the Ngarrindjeri people, as well as a promise to empower communities and acknowledge Ngarrindjeri rights to determine their future.
Alexandrina CEO Nigel Morris says the important bond formed at the signing of this agreement has since been strengthened through working together and sharing common goals.
‘Our Council highly values the relationship we have with the Ngarrindjeri people through the Ngarrindjeri Regional Authority and Council’s KNY Agreement,” he says.
“We have worked collaboratively to achieve common goals and develop strong outcomes on matters relating to the Ngarrindjeri, the Murray River and the Lower Lakes.”
Alexandrina Council remains committed to the principles and values of the KNY agreement and to the protection of areas of cultural significance to the Ngarrindjeri Nation.
It recognises that natural resource management and other activities are enhanced through the engagement and participation of the Ngarrindjeri people.
