Arrest over Kangaroo Island fatal crash

A man has been arrested following an investigation into a fatal crash on Kangaroo Island.

Just before 7.30pm on Wednesday 20 April, police were called to the Playford Highway near Bark Hut Road at Kohinoor, after reports that a Mitsubishi van had crashed and rolled.

The driver and sole occupant, a 79-year-old man from Parndana died at the scene.

Major Crash officers attended the scene to investigate the incident. They found the Mitsubishi van had swerved to avoid a tractor that was allegedly being driven without lights on Bark Hut Road.

Yesterday (Thursday 22 April), Major Crash officers arrested a 49-year-old Kangaroo Island man and charged him with causing death by dangerous driving and aggravated driving without due care.

He was bailed to appear in the Kingscote Magistrates Court on 16 May.

Investigators are seeking information from anyone who may have seen a large tractor being driven on Hog Bay Road, Penneshaw or the Playford Highway towards Parndana between about 6pm and 7.20pm on Wednesday 20 April.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The man’s death is the 24th life lost on South Australian roads, compared to 37 at this time last year.
