A long-awaited RSL Avenue of Honour was officially opened this morning, Wednesday 9 November, at the entrance to the Victor Harbor Golf Club.

The memorial plaque and cairn was unveiled by former state Governor and retired Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, just in time for Remembrance Day on 11 November.

It reads: “The Victor Harbor Avenue of Honour is dedicated to all those who served in the Australian forces home and abroad in all conflicts and in peacetime”.

The actual Avenue of Honour, consisting of Eucalyptus and Callistemon trees, has been planted along Pages Road, leading to the golf course.

The land involved is a road reserve owned by the local council.

The project was initiated by golf club member Bob Higgins more than three years ago and has been supported by the RSL, the City of Victor Harbor and local service clubs.

Mr Higgins’ intention was to create, “a stunning and uplifting feature,” that, “would provide environmental and aesthetic benefits… to be enjoyed by the local community and visitors.”

The idea is based on the avenue of trees that forms the entrance to the Grange Golf course in Adelaide and the famous Augusta Golf course in the USA.
