Avoid Christmas burnout with a light touch

With many people on the Fleurieu brightening up the season with festive lights, there is an urgent safety warning from the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) this year.

Community Safety and Resilience Officer Phil Evans says it’s important for people to follow some simple electrical fire safety tips to have bright festive season.

“When decorating a home with festive lights, if more than one item requires power it is important to use a power-board with an overload cut-out feature rather than using double adaptors.”

“If you decorate the exterior of your home only use Christmas lights designed for outdoor use.”

The MFS further warns consumers to make sure that adequate ventilation is provided to transformers which are commonly used for Christmas tree lights.

“To avoid a potential house fire, it’s important that transformers are placed on a hard, non-combustible surface, away from flammable materials, including presents,” Phil Evans says.

The MFS also urges the public to ensure any gifts purchased online are compliant with an Australian Standard. Look for a Regulatory Compliance Mark and/or the Standards Australia 'five ticks' symbol on the packaging.

Electronic Christmas gifts, such as remote-control drones or cars, and computer tablets, also carry a risk of fire if recharging is carried out without allowing the item to cool down first.

Always ensure electrical items are not left charging unattended and is on a non-combustible surface, for example on concrete flooring away from flammable materials.

Never charge devices or toys on soft furnishings, such as beds and lounge chairs.

“Once a device is fully charged, disconnect charging cables. Extended charging can cause degradation to the battery and increase the risk of overheating,” Phil Evans says.

The MFS advises householders to regularly check all cables and cords to ensure there is no visible wear or damage and replace any frayed, cracked scorched or damaged electrical or extension cables.

If a fire occurs, early detection is vital. The MFS urges householders to combine the above safety tips with interconnected smoke alarms that are less than 10 years old and a Home Fire Escape Plan.

The MFS wishes everyone a safe and Merry Christmas.
