Bank SA to close Goolwa branchThe Bank SA branch in Cadell Street, Goolwa

The doors will shut on the Bank SA Goolwa branch for the last time at 1pm on Friday 1 July.

This will leave Goolwa with one operating bank in the town but none in the main street.

Bank SA customers will now have to travel to Victor Harbor for face-to-face banking or use Australia Post services.

The Finance Sector Union says the Goolwa branch staff will be redeployed.

The move follows the decision by ANZ to close its local branch in 2018. National Australia Bank also closed their Goolwa branch some years ago.

The only remaining bank in town is Bendigo Bank which is located in the Goolwa Shopping Centre.

Bank SA says there has been a decline in face-to-face banking and they have invested in the way customers “choose to bank”.

Goolwa Mayor Keith Parkes has written to Bank SA to ask them to reconsider their decision.

He told ABC Radio today that the branch will be missed in the fastest growing region in South Australia.

He said Goolwa customers would have to drive 30 mins down the busy road to Victor Harbor to get face-to-face service.

He said not all older residents had iphones or were computer literate.

“They still want to go into their local bank,” he said.

He also questioned why Bank SA only gave their Goolwa customers three weeks notice of the decision to close the branch.

Bank SA has closed a number of small country branches in recent years, including the one at Mount Compass which closed in 2016.

They have recently changed their operating hours at McLaren Vale which is now closed daily between 12 and 1pm.

The Yankalilla Branch of Bank SA opens on a part-time basis, from 10 - 2pm on weekdays.

Bank SA is a division of Westpac Banking Corporation.

The Chief Executive Officer of Westpac, Peter King, released a media statement on 9 May, stating the group had made a statutory net profit of $3208M in the first half of 2022.

“I’m pleased with our progress on costs which are down 27%, or 10% excluding notable items, compared to the second half of 2021,” he said.

“This includes a reduction in headcount of more than 4000 as we track towards our target of an $8 billion cost base by FY243.”

Goolwa’s estimated population (as at June 2021) is 7 411.
