The mystery of the missing pontoon has been solved with District Council of Yankalilla issuing an update on the repair and recovery progress of the Normanville beach icon, in response to community concern.
The popular feature was first installed in the waters near the jetty off the Normanville foreshore for the summer of 2018-19.
Reinstalled after an upgrade in November 2019, the pontoon has again been missing for several months while undergoing repairs following winter storm damage.
No date for its return has yet been given as some major challenges delay reinstallation.
The council reports that the damaged ladder has been replaced, to ensure easy access to and from the pontoon.
A repair crew is working on buoyancy issues, to ensure the pontoon sits level in the water.
Two of the pontoon’s four anchor points are missing, preventing reinstallation.
The council thinks the chains may be buried under the sand and will bring in expert divers and underwater excavation teams to find and secure them.
It says closures around Christmas and New Year have caused a delay.
“We're working hard to get it back on the water as soon as possible.”
