Bin collection changes over summer

Bin collection arrangements in the Victor Harbor, Alexandrina, Yankalilla and Kangaroo Island council areas will be changed over the busy Christmas period.

Recycling and green waste bins will be collected weekly over the this period, however general waste will continue to only be picked up fortnightly.

In a post to Facebook the Fleurieu Regional Waste Authority says, "Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island Councils have long identified the need for extra waste collections during the summer peak and since the introduction of fortnightly collections, have provided weekly collection of general waste during the summer peak."

"Over summer, general waste production increases by 25 per cent across the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island with the community purchasing more and disposing of more material.

"The majority are materials like cardboard, containers, packaging, paper, glass, and of course food, all of which can be recycled (or composted) but more often ends up in the general waste bin because it is collected every week.

"The change to summer collections has been under investigation for two years, with a community trial, surveys and waste tracking and audits, with the weekly Recycling and FOGO (green bin) seen as the most promising alternative summer collection, with General Waste to Landfill remaining fortnightly, to increase the amount of material recycled and reduce the amount of material sent to landfill."
