Blewitt Springs development paused

A proposed distillery cellar door development for Blewitt Springs is on hold while its proponents revisit the planning application.

The company behind the McLaren Vale Cube, d’Arenberg, lodged an application for planning consent with Onkaparinga Council on 23 March.

It was for a tasting facility on Whitings Road with a two-storey shop and rooftop bar, plus associated parking and signage.

According to the council, adjoining landowners have lodged an appeal against the proposal in the Environment, Resources and Development Court.

d’Arenberg’s Chester Osborn told ABC Radio last week that he will revisit his plans in light of the objections.

He says the Cube also had its detractors but was now an iconic tourist attraction for the region and he hopes the Blewitt Springs development will fulfil the same role.

Some objectors have set up a Facebook page to outline their opposition to the project.

“We are not protesting having another cellar door or distillery in the area. That is to be expected in this area and welcomed.

“We are trying to get the word out that this is going to be huge and the size and structure does not fit the location that it is proposed to be.”

The council says public notification will be undertaken if any new application is lodged.

Plans of the original application are available for viewing at the council’s Noarlunga office
