Bulldogs keep finals hopes alive with important win in the GSFL

Mt Compass are just percentage out of the top-five after defeating reigning premier Myponga-Sellicks by 26 points during round 14 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at Myponga yesterday. The home side led by eight points after a low scoring first quarter, before Mt Compass kicked eight goals to three in the second term to lead by 26 points at halftime. The second half was even, with both teams kicking five goals, as Mt Compass won 13.9 (87) to 9.7 (61). Nathan Hicks kicked six goals for the Bulldogs, while Darren Shillabeer and Hayden Sampson kicked three goals each for the Mudlarks. Best players for Mt Compass included Klaus Simons, Nathan Schulz, Nathan Hicks, Lochie Nash, Craig Merritt and Tom Vitkunas. Myponga-Sellicks’ best were Jack Cooper, Hayden Sampson, Scott Hunt, Anthony Kempster, Jayden Scott and Shillabeer.


Encounter Bay has all but booked their spot in the finals after defeating Strathalbyn by 53 points. The Bays won every quarter on their way to a 13.14 (92) to 5.9 (39) victory. Ryan Pearsons kicked five goals for Encounter Bay, while Declan Gladigau was the only multiple goalkicker for the Roosters with two majors. Jackson Savage, Adam Hurrell, Mitchell Davis, James Brown, Kieran Garrett and Pearsons were named best for the Bays, while best for ‘Strath’ included Liam Newton, Gladigau, Jacob Wright, James Scott, Jack Wheaton and Zac Edwards.


Willunga remained top of the ladder after defeating Goolwa/Port Elliot by 43 points at Goolwa yesterday. The Demons won every quarter on their way to an 11.9 (75) to 5.2 (32) victory. Daniel Nobes was the standout forward on the field with five goals for Willunga, while Elijah Koop kicked two goals for the Magpies. Willunga’s best players in their 11th win in a row were Sam Renney, Jaxon Hams, Nathan Stark, Daniel Bass, Scott Brown and Aaron Douglass. Best players for the Magpies included Jayden Davis, Jett Reid, Jye Bottroff, Dene McKinlay, Riley Davis and Denzell Cross.



McLaren Districts moved a step closer to a top-three finish after defeating Langhorne Creek by 73 points at McLaren Vale yesterday. Langhorne Creek started well to lead by six points at the first change, but from then on it was all the home side as they kicked 13 goals to one to win 15.13 (103) to 4.6 (30). Cale Dellow and Henry Mathews kicked three goals apiece for the Eagles, while Matt Dominish kicked two goals for Langhorne Creek. Codey Ellison was named best for the Eagles and he was well supported by Daniel Marr, Dellow, Tom Fenoughty, Mathews and Kaine Hopkins. Best for the Hawks included Dominish, Caleb Howell, Lachlan Bates, Tom Derham and Darcy Clifford.


Victor Harbor consolidated their spot in the top-three with a comfortable 63-point win at home over Yankalilla. The ‘Roos bounced out to a handy 40-point lead at halftime, before kicking a further four goals to one in the second half to win 12.13 (85) to 2.10 (22). Harry Vincent (3), Sam Basham (2) and Clayton Mesecke (2) were the leading goalkickers for ‘Victor’, while their best players were Sam Overall, Reece Kleinig, Michael Ross, Zac Dowling, Kane Cooper and Lachlan Hartshorne. Best for the Tigers included Mackenzie Ryan, Patrick Chay, Jack Fitzgerald, Lachlan Whittlesea, Jesse Fitzgerald and Kohen Major.
