Call for council volunteersJake Baalmann is a volunteer with the Southern Communities Transport Scheme and Caring Neighbourhood Program.

The City of Victor Harbor has called for volunteers of all ages from the community who would like to work with the council.

Programs that are currently accepting expressions of interest for volunteering include: Caring Neighbourhood Program; Coral Street Art Space; Fleurieu Families; Southern Communities Transport Scheme; and Visitor Services.

Volunteer commitments can range from a few hours per month to several hours per week, depending on the specific role requirements.

They don’t necessarily need any particular skills or qualifications to apply.

City of Victor Harbor Chief Executive Officer Victoria MacKirdy says volunteers are an important part of the council workforce, and younger people are encouraged to apply.

“Council’s volunteers contribute to a range of projects, programs and initiatives that help to make Victor Harbor even better,” she says.

“As council’s programs and services grow, we are always happy to welcome new volunteers that can help us achieve great things for the community.”

“Volunteer roles can vary significantly. We have drivers, gardeners, office assistants, cleaners, and just about everything in between!”

“If you’re young, volunteering can be a great way to gain experience for your resume.”

Jake Baalmann is one of the council’s youngest volunteers, working with the Southern Communities Transport Scheme and Caring Neighbourhood Program.

“I find it very rewarding and I enjoy helping people in the community,” he says.

“To anyone considering volunteering, I would say go for it. It’s a great thing to do.”

Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins says some of the council’s volunteers have been offering their time and expertise for decades.

“Our volunteers are absolutely incredible. I’m always astounded at their generosity.

“They come from all walks of life, but one thing they have in common is that they love supporting our local community,” she says.

“If you have some spare time on your hands, and you’re looking for a way to stay social and connected, volunteering could be a great option for you.”

To express interest in becoming a volunteer contact the council via email.

Council staff will to find a volunteer role that is the perfect fit, based on availability, skills and interests.
