Council elections across the state are due in November and the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) is offering free information sessions for women thinking about nominating.
Fleurieu sessions will be held in Strathalbyn on Saturday 25 June and in Noarlunga on Thursday 30 June.
Women Leading Locally - It’s Time is the theme chosen by the ALGWA SA for its campaign to encourage more women to get involved in local government.
President of ALGWA SA, Cr Julie Woodman, says when more women stand up, more women are elected.
“Despite the fact that women make up more than half of the population, after the 2018 elections only 35 per cent of South Australian councillors were women.
“There are so many capable women in our communities who, when equipped with information and encouragement, will make wonderful advocates for local residents.
“It is also important, as an inclusive society, that the composition of councils reflects the diversity of the communities they serve.”
“Being a councillor provides an exciting opportunity to make a positive difference in your local community by making vital decisions that make your area a better place to live, work and bring up children.”
Nominations open on Tuesday 23 August and close on Tuesday 6 September.
“It’s time now to think about nominating as a candidate and planning a campaign,” Cr Woodman says.
ALGWA SA is holding nine free information sessions across the state.
The Strathalbyn session on Saturday 25 June will be at the Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre at 9.30am for a 10am zoom presentation.
Councillors Samantha Jones from Mount Barker and Bronwyn Lewis from Alexandrina will host a briefing, with practical tips around campaigning over coffee and biscuits.
The Noarlunga session is on Thursday 30 June from 5.30pm to 8.30pm in the Gilbert Room, Onkaparinga Council Civic Centre, Noarlunga Centre.
Participants will be able to meet current councillors and ask questions.
More information including registration details is on the ALGWA SA website.
Currently Alexandrina Council has four women elected members, of a total of 12; The City of Victor Harbor has three of eight, including Mayor Moira Jenkins; the District Council of Yankalilla has one of nine; and the City of Onkaparinga has five of 12, following the departure of former Mayor Erin Thompson.
