Alexandrina Council has put out a call for residents to donate old bicycles to use as decorations for the Santos Tour Down Under (TDU) Best Dressed Town Competition.
All donated bikes will be distributed to community groups, businesses, and schools to paint and place along the route of the Hahn Men’s Stage 4 riding through the region on 19 January 2024.
Old and unwanted bikes can be dropped off at the council’s Goolwa Works Depot at 126 Kessell Road, Goolwa, during working hours 8.30 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.
Donors are asked to leave them by the visitors sign at the main office. Residents are welcome to get creative and decorate them before dropping them off.
The council has thanked Goolwa Salvage and Save for kicking off the collection, by generously donating 10 bikes.
Held each year in January during the Tour Down Under since its inception in 1999, the Best Dressed Town competition is a popular part of the international cycling event.
The competition is a great way for South Australian communities to get involved and be a part of the excitement of the TDU.
It is open to all towns, schools, businesses, and households along the race route on all stages.
Colourful decorations help boost the atmosphere efforts and provide support for the professional cycling teams as they ride through regional and metropolitan South Australia.
The Hahn Men's Stage 4 event will race through Langhorne Creek, Strathalbyn, Ashbourne, Currency Creek, Goolwa, Middleton and finish at Port Elliot.
