Celebrate good citizens across the community

Nominations remain open for the 2022 Australia Day Citizen of the Year awards until 24 November.

All the Fleurieu councils - The District Council of Yankalilla, Alexandrina Council and the Cities of Victor Harbor and Onkaparinga - have called for community involvement in recognising contributions to the community.

The Citizen of the Year Awards recognise South Australians who enable their communities to be stronger as a result of their tireless efforts.

They offer outstanding service each day and so often this is invisible as they don’t do it for the praise, they do it because it makes a difference to the people of their community.

The Citizen of the Year Awards are proudly presented by the Australia Day Council of South Australia and administered by local councils.

The Awards reward and recognise individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year, and/or give an outstanding service over a number of years, to a local community over and above normal employment duties.

Outstanding contribution and community service includes areas such as education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and well-being of a community.

The awards that can be nominated include:

  • Citizen of the Year - presented to an Australian Citizen making an extraordinary contribution to the community and may recognise outstanding service over a number of years.
  • Young Citizen of the Year - presented to a young person, aged over 16 and under 30  who makes a real difference in their community, potentially over multiple years.
  • Community Event of the Year - presented to the person or group who has staged the most outstanding event for their community.
  • Award for Active Citizenship - presented to a person or group delivering outstanding work on an event or project for the community during the past calendar year.

Nominations can be made online or at your local council office, with nominations closing 24 November.

An official awards ceremony will take place in each council area on Australia Day, 26 January 2022.
