First Nations peoples will be celebrated across the Alexandrina region during NAIDOC week – the first week of July.
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Alexandrina Council and its communities acknowledge the Ngarrindjeri people as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters of the district.
The first local event is Nunga Screen 2022 at Goolwa’s Centenary Hall on Wednesday 6 July.
Nunga Screen shares and celebrates First Nations culture, stories and language through film.
This year’s program is made up of 11 short films that are all South Australian.
It features stories of love, friendship, healing country practices, of belonging, community, culture, and above all the strength and connection of First Nations peoples to their land and culture.
The session times are 10.30am, 1pm and 6.30pm. Tickets are free but must be booked online via TryBooking.
Eastern Fleurieu School in Strathalbyn will host a NAIDOC celebration on Thursday 7 July at 9.15am. To attend RSVP via email by 4 July.
On Sunday 10 July there will be a community event at Ratalang Bashams Beach Reserve in Port Elliot from 11am to 2pm. All are welcome.
NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. For more information on NAIDOC Week, visit the website.
