District Council of Yankalilla and Kangaroo Island Council have now opened nominations for their 2025 citizenship awards.

Mayor Michael Pengilly has announced the opening of nominations for the Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, and Community Project of the Year awards.

The awards recognise individuals, events, and projects that have made an outstanding contribution to the Kangaroo Island community.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to honour those who dedicate their time and energy to making our community a better place,” Mr Pengilly says.

“We encourage everyone to nominate deserving people, events, and projects that have had a positive impact on Kangaroo Island.”

District Council of Yankalilla has four awards open for nomination: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year and award for Active Citizenship. Nominations can be made online.

The 2024-25 Kangaroo Island Council Community Grants Scheme is also now open. The scheme provides financial grants for projects that benefit the broader Kangaroo Island community.

Mayor Pengilly says, “The Community Grants Scheme is a fantastic opportunity for local groups and organisations to secure funding for projects that align with our community’s needs and values.

“We encourage all eligible applicants to put forward their ideas and contribute to the growth and well-being of Kangaroo Island.”

Applications will be assessed against several criteria, including:

  • Projects that bring social, environmental, and cultural benefits to Kangaroo Island.
  • A focus on areas of community need and shared community values.

The Grant pool available is $22,500 for the 2024-25 financial year, with a maximum amount of $4,000 available for any application.

Recipients of awards and grants will be presented at the Australia Day 2025 celebrations on Kangaroo Island.

Nominations for both close at 5pm on Saturday 30 November 2024. Visit the Kangaroo Island Council website for more information.
