South Australia’s coastal councils and community groups can now apply for a share of $1 million in grants to help protect and manage the state’s coastlines.

Applications are open for the Coast Protection Board’s two annual grant programs, the $1 million 2023 Coast Protection Grants Program and the $30,000 Community Participation Grant Program.

The Coast Protection Grants Program provides funds to coastal councils for work that helps restore, protect and manage the state’s valuable coastal assets, and address climate change risks.

High priorities for this program include work or studies addressing erosion or flood risks, including foreshore protection, coastal adaption planning and beach replenishment.

The Community Participation Grants Program supports not-for-profit organisations and volunteer groups to partner with councils and undertake small-scale coastal management projects or education initiatives.

Minister for Climate, Environment and Water Susan Close says the grants provide a fantastic opportunity for councils and local groups to get help to do the important work of protecting local coastlines.

“The South Australian coastline stretches more than 5,000km - including several offshore islands – and is home to approximately 90 per cent of the state’s population.

“We are so lucky to have such amazing coastlines, and we must continue to protect them.”

Coast Protection Board Presiding Member Jeff Tate says councils are on the frontline of managing coastal issues and it’s important they are supported. 

“We are also incredibly lucky to have such passionate people and community groups involved in environmental work, so the Coast Protection Board highly encourages them to apply for this funding to help meet their goals.”
