Cockle Divers win tough slog

Port Noarlunga consolidated fourth spot on the ladder after a tough 22-point win over arch rival Reynella in round 16 action in the Southern Football League on the weekend. In tough conditions at Port Noarlunga, the home side trailed by one point at the final change but buoyed by a vocal home crowd and wanting to honour Ian Brown in his 250th game, the Cockle Divers roared home kicking 3.5 to 0.0 in the final term to win 7.14 (56) to 5.4 (34). Jake Veide kicked two goals for Port Noarlunga and was named among the best players with Aaron Peterson and Dylan Williams. Steven Farrelly was named best for the Wine Flies with support from Bailey Marshman and Lachlan Inthavong.


Morphett Vale hung on for a thrilling one point victory over Happy Valley at Morphett Vale. The home side flew out the blocks kicking five unanswered goals in the first quarter to lead by 29 points at quarter time.The Emus extended their lead out to 34 points at half-time and the game looked over. The Vikings roared back into contention by kicking four goals to one in the third term to only trail by 16 points at the last change. The visitors threw everything they had at the Emus in the last term kicking three goals while the home side could only manage three behinds but Morphett Vale hung on to win 8.6 (54) to 8.5 (53). The loss for the Vikings put paid to their slim finals hopes. Tyron Bennetts kicked three goals for the Emus while Matthew Lillis was a standout for Happy Valley with four goals. Bodie Sowter, Jack Langdon and Daniel Bode were best for Morphett Vale while for the Vikings Henry Kerrison, Lillis and Michael Parker were among the best.


Noarlunga remain undefeated after a convincing 98-point thrashing of Cove at Hallett Cove. Inaccurate kicking in the first term from Noarlunga saw scores level at quarter time, 0.7 to 1.1. The game opened up in the second term with Noarlunga kicking three goals to zero but it was after half-time when the Shoes really showed their class kicking a whopping 10 goals in the third quarter and keeping Cove to a solitary behind. The last quarter saw more of the same as the premiership favourite cruised to victory 18.14 (122) to 3.6 (24). Noarlunga shared the goals around with nine different goal kickers including Nicholas Mott, Reece Martell and Vic Robertson all kicking three majors. Ryan Need kicked two goals for the Cobras. For the third week in a row Mott was named best for the Shoes and he was assisted by Danny Irvine and Sammual Miller. Cove’s best were Damian Roach, Need and Alex O'Shaughnessy.


Three-time reigning premier Flagstaff Hill rolled into second spot with a 133-point victory at Aldinga. The Falcons led by 38 points at quarter time, 73 points at half-time and 95 points at the final change before running out winners 20.15 (135) to 0.2 (2). Flagstaff Hill shared the goals around having a whopping 13 different goal kickers including Daniel Webb and David Kearsley with three each. Kearsley, Ben Rossi and Max Renfrey were best for the Falcons while Luke Watson, Nyaningu Thomas and Mathew Beinke were best for an outgunned Aldinga outfit.
