Code blue called with rough weather ahead

A widespread Code Blue has been called for for regional centres, including the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island from now until 9am on Tuesday 12 September.

With a prolonged period of low temperatures, strong winds, thunderstorms and hail been forecast to start today, Wednesday 6 September, a Code Blue response has been called in the following regional areas:

  • Upper Spencer Gulf
  • Lower Eyre
  • Copper Coast
  • Riverland
  • Clare Valley
  • Murraylands
  • Limestone Coast
  • Fleurieu Peninsula
  • Kangaroo Island

Local Code Blue responses for people rough sleeping will be activated for these areas.

Across the state: Homeless Connect SA will continue to operate 24/7. Anyone who is homeless or at risk of homelessness is encouraged to contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308.

Minister for Human Services Nat Cook MP says Code Blue aims to reduce the harmful effects on people rough sleeping by connecting them with support services and providing additional supports, including extended operating hours, increased shelter options or additional food services.

"These responses help people experiencing homelessness who are most affected by extreme cold weather to remain warm and safe and to protect their belongings from the weather.

"For rough sleepers, risks include developing or worsening of chronic health issues and poorer longer term health outcomes. There is also a risk of death due to sleeping in dangerous areas such as riverbanks prone to flash flooding.

"My department, the SA Housing Authority coordinates these responses in partnership with other providers. Please call Homeless Connect SA, on 1800 003 308, if you are or know someone who is a rough sleeper."
