City of Onkaparinga will give away native trees to residents at Seaford Community Centre on Sunday 2 June.
The event is part of the council’s new One Tree Per Child partnership, which encourages kids to get planting and increase tree canopy across the region.
There will be 1000 native tree and shrub tubestock available, with a range of species on offer.
Expert advice will be on hand to help choose the species that best suits local gardens, no matter the size.
The range of tree and shrub species on offer will provide habitat for native birds, insects and animals as well as shade.
The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is the council’s focus native animal for 2024 and the tree species on offer are tailored to creating habitat that will help encourage their numbers back to the region.
The plants will be available on a first come, first served basis to anyone with proof of Onkaparinga residence.
The family event will run from 2pm to 4.30pm and will include a special welcome to country, smoking and painting ceremony.
The Amazing Drumming Monkeys will perform and there will be kids' face painting, ochre play and craft activities.
Hands-on planting demonstrations and habitat workshops suitable for all ages will help ensure the giveaway trees are successful.
One Tree Per Child Onkaparinga is a collaboration between the council, not-for profit organisation One Tree Per Child, Green Adelaide, Arborgreen and Trees For Life.
