Alexandrina Council has given notice that work will begin today, 16 June, on the Ratalang Basham Dune Stabilisation Project.
The council manages Ratalang Basham Beach Conservation Reserve, located on the coastal strip between Port Elliot and Middleton, under lease from the state government.
An advisory committee consisting of councillors, council staff, Ngarrindjeri representatives and committed community members with passionate and historical links to the reserve contributes to park management.
The project will deliver a Geo-fabric bag reinforcement and stormwater outlet to prevent erosion to the dune system and protect environmental, ecological and cultural aspects of the park.
The council has contracted South Coast Sand and Civil to complete the on-ground works, which are expected to finish by 30 June.
A small beach access at The Gap will be closed throughout this time but there are alternative access paths close-by that park users can use.
A small rustic shelter will also be installed in this area, which should be completed by 30 June.
The master plan for Ratalang Basham Beach Conservation Reserve is available on the Alexandrina Council website.
