An application to extend a sand mine on Kangaroo Island has triggered a consultation process under the Aboriginal Heritage Act.
The MacGillivray Sand Mine is on Crown land located 20km south of Kingscote.
There are archival records of an Aboriginal site within the existing quarry and heritage assessments in the past two years have identified heritage in the area.
The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Kyam Maher, must decide whether to authorise damage, disturbance or interference with Aboriginal heritage that may occur as a result of quarry activities.
Although there is no native title determination or claim over any part of Kangaroo Island, Ngarrindjeri, Ramindjeri, Kaurna and Narungga peoples all assert traditional interests over the island.
A public meeting for traditional owners and interested parties will be held in Victor Harbor on 13 August.
The consultation period closes on Thursday 1 September.
Full details of the proposed quarry extension can be found on the Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation website.
Information on the consultation process is available on the Your Say website.
