Alexandrina council has proposed a reduction in the number of its wards and councillors, following a recent electoral representation review.

Wards would be reduced from five to three and councillors from 11 to 9, while the mayor would still be directly elected by the community.

The three proposed wards are Alexandrina North, Alexandrina South and Alexandrina West; each would elect three councillors.

The five current wards are Nangkita Kuitpo, represented by Bill Coomans; Angas Bremer, represented by Karyn Bradford and Michael Farrier; Port Elliot Middleton, represented by Bronwyn Lewis and Michael Scott; Strathalbyn, represented by Rex Keily and Craig Maidment; and Goolwa Hindmarsh Island, represented by John Carter, Margaret Gardner, Melissa Rebbeck and James Stewart.

Under the new structure, the districts around Strathalbyn and Langhorne Creek would broadly comprise the ward of Alexandrina North.

The localities of Clayton Bay, Milang, Finniss, Goolwa, Hindmarsh Island and Currency Creek would form Alexandrina South.

Alexandrina West would stretch from Goolwa Beach to Hayborough and up to Mount Compass, Willunga Hill and Kuitpo.

It is a legal requirement for all councils to review their electoral procedures and boundaries at least every eight years, to take into account population changes.

Full details of the review and the proposed changes are on the Alexandrina Council website, where the community can also have its say.

Community consultation closes at 5pm on 21 May, after which the council will make its final decision.

The changes would take effect from the next council elections, due in November 2022.
