Councils help people plan for the future

The three Fleurieu councils have launched a new community service that will equip people with the information they need to complete their own Advance Care Directive.

The City of Victor Harbor, the District Council of Yankalilla and Alexandrina Council will offer free appointments to get an Advance Care Directive underway.

An Advance Care Directive can give peace of mind in case something happens that means people are unable to make their own decisions.

This could be because of a sudden accident or an unexpected illness.

It empowers people to make clear legal arrangements for their future health care, end of life, preferred living arrangements and other personal matters.

A YouTube video explains Advance Care Directives and why they are important.

The three councils have made trained volunteer Peer Support Officers available for free one-on-one appointments to help navigate the Advance Care Directive Form.

Appointments take around 45 minutes and a follow-up appointment is possible if needed.

The Victor Harbor Civic Centre has appointments on Mondays and Wednesdays, subject to availability; book via email or call 8551 0500.

Appointments can also be booked at the Yankalilla library by email or call 8558 0200

Alexandrina Council offers appointments in Goolwa; book via email or call 8555 7000.

The initiative is supported by Office for Ageing Well and Health Services Programs, SA Health.
