Alexandrina Council is calling on the community to report suspicious behaviour or damage to community facilities.
Goolwa's Rose Garden public toilets were temporarily closed last week due to significant damage by vandals.
Council staff and contractors prioritised the repairs to these well-used facilities during the busy summer period.
The council says in the past five months vandals have caused more than $20,000 damage to public toilets and beach shower facilities at Goolwa, Middleton, Clayton Bay and Milang.
Insurance does cover the damage, but vandalism does incur a significant cost to ratepayers in terms of lost amenity, inconvenience, insurance premium excesses, cost gaps and staff time.
The council says vandalism happens regularly at public toilets across the district and is one of the reasons public toilets are locked at night.
All instances of vandalism have been reported to police.
Anyone who knows anything about these incidents or who witnesses damage done to public facilities is asked to contact SA Police on 131 444.
It can also be reported to the council on 8555 700 or via email.
