The SA Country Football Championships were held in Port Pirie this weekend with players from six zones throughout the state competing to be crowned the best in country footy. The Southern zone was represented by players from the Southern Football League (SFL), Kangaroo Island Football League (KIFL) and the Great Southern Football League (GSFL). The men’s team finished runners-up after losing the Grand Final to South East by 15 points, while the women’s team finished fifth after defeating Northern in the fifth v sixth playoff game. Eastern won the women’s competition for the second year running.
Willunga teammates Jodie Hunt and Bella Rigby from Southern Women were recognised with selection in the team of the carnival side. Four players from the Southern Men’s team also made the team of the carnival lineup. They were Nick Kraemer (Happy Valley), Cooper Rogers (Happy Valley), Ben Heaslip (Victor Harbor) and Callum Bennett (Christies Beach). Heaslip also took home the Men’s player of the championships award.
