Finniss MP David Basham has called for urgent repairs to be made to Cut Hill on the Victor Harbor road, which has again recently been damaged by a vehicle.

“As an Indicative Place on the National Heritage list, this wall is not only a tourist feature but also plays a significant role in supporting the road's structure,” Mr Basham says.

He has written to the Minister for Regional Roads requesting additional barriers to make the road safer and to reduce the costs of future repairs.

The site is just south of the intersection with Crows Nest Road and has a small shoulder where cars can pull off the road.

It features a stone picnic table and a plaque outlining the history of Cut Hill.

According to The Dry Stone Wall Association of Australia, the construction is something special.

“It was contracted by the Central Roads Board in 1868 to one Jabez Grimble, who had already built culverts and bridges in the district, to make the road safe for travellers.

“The metre-high dry-stone parapet is probably all that most travellers see... Less obvious is the several metre-high abutment sitting on an impossibly steep slope below.

“Not only is this stone masonry of the highest standard, it is also first-class civil engineering.

The stone was quarried on-site.

Mr Basham says there were two car accidents in 2018 that caused damage to the wall, which took two months to repair and cost around $50,000.

“I will continue to advocate for this beautiful and functional Finniss Electorate asset and encourage everyone to report any state road damage or hazards by calling 1800 018 313.”
