Damaged Second Valley jetty closed

The District Council of Yankalilla has temporarily closed the Second Valley jetty  because of a significant risk to public safety.

The council says a portion of the heritage listed causeway structures has collapsed, due to a powerful combination of high waves, strong winds and storm surges.

It says it will work closely with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport and Department of Environment and Water to assess the most suitable and effective repairs.

“We understand the importance of the Second Valley Jetty to the community and are committed to restoring access to it as soon as possible.”

The recent state budget committed $20 million towards preserving regional jetties, allocating $5 million per year for four years to partner with local councils and improve the condition and sustainability of the state’s ageing jetties.

Many of the state’s 75 predominately timber jetties are over 100 years old and require ongoing maintenance to ensure safe public access.

Currently, 35 of the 75 jetties are divested to local councils and, under the lease arrangements, councils are responsible for all aspects of repairs and maintenance of these jetties.

Infrastructure Minister Tom Koutsantonis says jetties are vital infrastructure in regional communities – but only when they are safe, accessible and open.

“The major challenge facing jetties is they are predominately timber structures, and many are over 100 years old and in poor condition, with some nearing the end of their operational life.

“They require regular and expensive maintenance to withstand harsh marine conditions.”

Treasurer Stephen Mullighan says repairing these jetties can quickly get beyond the capacity of regional councils.

“This money will contribute to ensuring key jetties maintain their charm and character while preserving the unique aesthetic appeal of each region.

“Upgraded, refurbished and safe jetties attract more visitors and encourage increased economic and tourism activity, as well as providing spaces for recreation.”
