A significant tree in Aldinga has been marked for removal by The City of Onkaparinga.
A qualified arborist has assessed the large willow myrtle tree located in Follett Street and identified it as a safety risk.
The council says that unfortunately, there are no reasonable management options other than complete tree removal.
It is one of six significant trees across the council area identified as problematic and marked for removal.
A deadline of 5pm on Tuesday 13 December has been set for the local community to have input into the decision.
A final decision is likely to be made early next year, as a Development Application will be required if removal is approved.
The council says that when a ‘Regulated’ or ‘Significant’ tree is approved for removal, two or three trees will be planted to compensate.
Should the Follett Street tree be removed, the council will plant three replacement trees sometime in the 2023 planting season – from May to October.
It says it has established urban forest targets to increase urban vegetation cover and tree canopy in the City of Onkaparinga by 20 percent by 2045.
The council has also committed to planting 100,000 new trees in street verges, waterways and parks by 2037.
Full details of the significant tree removal process and how to have a say can be found on the City of Onkaparinga website.
