Canadian Geese are aggressive, noisy and territorial and a real problem for New Zealand farmers and now there's been reported sightings of a pair on Kangaroo Island.

The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board says the geese (Branta canadensis) are a declared pest under the Landscape SA Act. They are asking anyone who sees the birds to report the sightings to them.

The first sighting was made on Island Beach on Wednesday 18 May.

A second, more reliable sighting was then made on Monday 23 May. On that occasion the birds were in flight and heading towards Nepean Bay / Red Banks.

Canadian geese are native to North America and the Arctic but were introduced to New Zealand for hunting in 1905.

They now exist in large numbers and have been called the rabbit of the sky due to the damage they do to pastures and waterways.

They are not established in Australia.

Please report any sightings to the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board via their facebook page, at 35 Dauncey Street in Kingscote, email at [email protected] or phone 8553 2476.
