The next stage of Alexandrina Council’s review of its strategic, financial and infrastructure plans for 2020 to 2040 starts this month.
Planning for the future is a big task and the council is calling on the community to contribute ideas to the planning process.
The review began with Listening Posts last October and November, held at 13 community events, as well as focus groups and school visits.
More than 1100 people shared their ideas, summarised in a report called What We Heard.
The findings show that what people love most about Alexandrina is a sense of community and friendly people; the natural environment including the beach, river and countryside; and the broad range of community facilities such as libraries, skate parks, bike paths and playgrounds.
The community identified climate change and environmental issues; the need for services and infrastructure to keep up with a growing population; and a lack of local employment as the biggest challenges facing the region.
This year council will introduce new ways for people to get involved, including a roadshow of Village Conversations and an opportunity to pitch ideas on how to budget for council services, known as participatory budgeting.
Throughout February and March, Village Conversations will be held in eight townships across the region; giving locals an opportunity to get together and discuss their ideas for how council spending should be prioritised to achieve community goals and help realise the full potential of Alexandrina 2040.
For more information on how to get involved, including RSVP details for upcoming events, visit the council website.
The Participatory Budget process opens on Monday 10 February.
