Willunga made it three FP-AG Great Southern Football League ‘A’ Grade Women’s (GSFLW) flags in a row yesterday after they defeated Yankalilla/Encounter Bay by 36 points in the Grand Final at Goolwa. The Demons lost just one game for the season and are the dominant force in the GSFLW. Yankalilla/Encounter Bay, in their first season in the competition as a merged entity, did a great job to come from fourth position on the ladder to reach the decider, but ultimately fell short against the powerhouse Demons. Yesterday, the first quarter was tight with scores locked away at 1.0 (6) apiece at the first change. The Demons put on three unanswered goals in the second term to take a handy 18-point lead to halftime, and kicked another two goals in the second half to run out winners 6.8 (44) to 1.2 (8). Jessica Harris kicked two goals for Willunga, while Molly Watters kicked the only goal for the Stingrays. Best players for Willunga included best-on-ground Cleo Guilfoyle, Tessa Kohn, Lauren Clifton, Emma Leask, Kiara Upitis and Katrice Turner. Best players for the Stingrays were Georgia Weatherspoon, Jaimi Griffen, Jemma Ellis, Kelesha Rewiti-Edwards, Chloe Howlett and Tegan Cross.
Willunga’s day got off to a great start with their under 17 girls team also winning their third premiership in a row with a 35-point win against Victor Harbor. Willunga led by 14 points at halftime, before kicking three goals to one in the second half to win 6.12 (48) to 2.1 (13). Patience Hansen and Emily Steele kicked two goals each for the Demons, while Lily Baxter and Lauren Cousins kicked the goals for ‘Victor’. Emily Steele was named best on ground for Willunga and she was well supported by Emma Charlton, Bella Rigby, Eden Coleman, Raffael Lombardozzi and Patience Hansen. Best players for the ‘Roos were Jemma Liddell, Chloe Colman, Halle Crowe, Baxter, Lily Harrison and Mya Church.
