Eagles flying in Great Southern Football

Reigning premier McLaren Districts consolidated their spot in the top-three after defeating Mt Compass by 14 points during round 15 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at McLaren Vale yesterday. The Eagles led at every change before winning 13.15 (93) to 12.7 (79). Codey Ellison (5), Matthew Merrett (4) and Sam Venning (2) were the leading goal kickers for McLaren Districts, while Tom Vitkunas (4) and Tom Pinyon (3) were the multiple goal kickers for the Bulldogs. Best players for McLaren Districts included Merrett, Ashley Goodieson, Ellison, Lachlan Camm, Sam Lawrie and Tom Fenoughty. Best for ‘Compass’ were Will Zimmermann, Vitkunas, Shannon Jones, Rilee Endersby, Lochie Nash and Cody Connor.


Strathalbyn won their fifth game of the season after a comfortable 62-point win at home against Goolwa/Port Elliot. Roosters skipper Marc Elliot kicked five goals in a best-on-ground performance as ‘Strath’ won 18.15 (123) to 8.13 (61). Other good players for Strathalbyn included Daniel Pegler, Ashton Hoffman, Harry Hopkins, Ben Simounds (4 goals) and Mitchell Godfrey. Tom Fergusson and Brock Donaldson kicked three goals each for the Magpies, while their best players were Dene McKinlay, Patrick Grigg, Ryan Carnelly, Fergusson, Willhem Norde and Kaiden Wilton.


Victor Harbor moved a step closer to the minor premiership after defeating Willunga by 54 points yesterday. ‘Victor’ led throughout to triumph 21.14 (140) to 12.14 (86). Sam Basham kicked five goals for the ‘Roos to give him 77 majors in 2024. He was well supported by Michael Ross (4) and Sam Overall (3). Ryan Sherry and Jacob Shoolbread kicked three goals each for the Demons. Best players for Victor Harbor included Ben Heaslip, Ross, Rhys Bartram, Heath Treloar, Harry Vincent and Bryce Gibbs. Job Colwell, Ryan Collier, Felix Bekkers, Sam Tregenza, Izaac Logan and Shoolbread were named best for the Demons.


Encounter Bay kept the pressure on for a top-three spot after defeating Yankalilla by 43 points. The Bays led by 11 points at halftime, before kicking six goals to two in the second half to win 14.14 (98) to 8.7 (55). Bays skipper Tyson Neale kicked  five goals in a best-on-ground display, while Harrison Kantilla kicked three goals for the Tigers. Other good players for Encounter Bay included Callum Tonkin, Elijah Horrocks, Ben Davis, Andrew Fyfe and Ambrose Willoughby. Jesse Fitzgerald, Bailey Gaskin, William Hogben, Joseph Tyllis, Liam Gerber and Chris Clark were the best players for Yankalilla.


Myponga-Sellicks remain in third spot on the ladder after a tight 18-point win at home against Langhorne Creek. The ‘Creeks’ led by two points at halftime, before the Mudlarks kicked nine goals to six in the second half to win 13.14 (92) to 11.8 (74). Darren Shillabeer kicked five goals for the Mudlarks (75 for the season), while Mitch Cleggett kicked four goals for the Hawks. Best players for Myponga-Sellicks included Nicholas Hutchings, Harrison Cock, John Butcher, Ben Kennedy, Mitchell Wilkins and Jayden Heinze. Best for Langhorne Creek were Tyler Follett, Mitch Cleggett, William Bruce, Tom Derham, Jake Yard and Caleb Howell.
