Eagles take big scalp in Great Southern Football

McLaren Districts consolidated third spot on the ladder after a come-from-behind nine-point win over Victor Harbor during round 13 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at McLaren Vale on Saturday. ‘Victor’ led by nine points at the last change before the Eagles roared home, kicking the last four goals of the game, to win 16.8 (104) to 14.11 (95). Brett Ellis kicked three goals for McLaren Districts, while Jackson Elmes and Sam Basham also kicked three goals for Victor Harbor. Best players for McLaren Districts included Jamie Smith, Ellis, Brodie Long, Tom Fenoughty, Daniel Marr and Billy Chahla. Victor Harbor’s best players were Jaidan Kappler, Reece Kleinig, Ben Heaslip, Heath Treloar, Rhys Bartram and Sam Overall.


Willunga won their 10th game on the trot to move to the top of the ladder after a comprehensive 96-point win at Yankalilla on Saturday. The Demons led by 32 points at halftime, before kicking a further 15 goals to five in the second half to win 23.15 (153) to 9.3 (57). Daniel Nobes kicked eight goals for the Demons, while Dylan Draper continued his excellent season with six goals. Nobes and Draper are proving to be an excellent ‘1-2 punch’ at Willunga with 88 goals between them in 2025. Joel Kay kicked three goals for the Tigers. Willunga skipper Sam Renney was named best-on-ground and he was well supported by Liam Nye, Nathan Stark, Nobes, Harry Saunders and Tyson Hoffmann. Best players for Yankalilla included Lachlan Whittlesea, Jesse Fitzgerald, Sam Crawford, Jack Fitzgerald, Karlson Kantilla and Michael Thompson.


Langhorne Creek won their second game in a row after defeating reigning premiers Myponga-Sellicks by 13 points. The Mudlarks got off to a fast start to lead by 26 points at quarter time. Langhorne Creek then kicked 11 goals to five after the first break to win 11.11 (77) to 9.10 (64). Caleb Howell, Jack Hall, Jackson Dalitz and Lachlan Bates kicked two goals each for the Hawks, while Darren Shillabeer (3), Jake Spinks (2) and Hayden Sampson (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Myponga-Sellicks. Mitchell Cleggett, Matt Dominish, Howell, Jake Yard, Lachlan Bates and Darcy Clifford were named best for the Hawks. Best players for the Mudlarks included Jack Cooper, Anthony Kempster, Hayden Sampson, Mitchell Wilkins, Connor Sampson and Kain Spinks.



Encounter Bay won their eighth game of the season following a big 181-point victory over Goolwa/Port Elliot. Ben Davis kicked 10 goals for the Bays in a best-on-ground performance as his side won 29.21 (195) to 2.2 (14). Nick Marshall and Tyson Neale chipped in with six goals each as the Bays consolidated their spot in the top-five. Joining Ben Davis in the best players was Jackson Savage, Nick Marshall, Adam Hurrell, Neale and Ryan Pearsons. The Magpies’ best included Riley Davis, Levi Baillie, Jett Reid, Dene McKinlay and Fred Nissen.


Strathalbyn won their third game of the season following a 22-point win at Mt Compass on Saturday. The Roosters set up their win with a strong first half which saw them lead by 27 points at halftime, before winning 14.8 (92) to 10.10 (70). Strathalbyn skipper Jake Stafford kicked four goals, while Tom Pinyon kicked five majors for Mt Compass. Best players for Strathalbyn included Jordan Kenny, Declan Gladigau, Reuben Stutley, Thomas Welk, Stafford and Liam Newton. Klaus Simons, Hugh Daniell, Tom Vitkunas, Pinyon, Adam Hunter and Nathan Schulz were named best for the Bulldogs.
