Encounter Bay go big in Great Southern Cricket

A 220-run third-wicket stand between youngster Finn Magor and veteran Sam Hoffmann has powered Encounter Bay to a big score on day one of their clash with Yankalilla during round six action of the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Yankalilla yesterday. The pair came together with the score on 2/45 with Hoffmann smashing 161 from 172 balls (12 x 4’s, 7 x 6’s), while Magor made 101 not out from 156 balls (13 x 4’s, 1 x 6) as the Bays posted a massive 7/335 from their 70 overs. It was a long day for the Yankalilla side who used nine bowlers after sending the visitors in with Aaron Smith (2/70) the only multiple wicket taker for the Tigers.

Myponga-Sellicks also had a good day with the bat as they posted 7/279 from their 70 overs against Port Elliot at Myponga. After losing Sean Haverty (1) early with the score at 1/5, left-handed opener Michael Tomlinson was joined by Ryan Haverty in an innings-defining partnership worth 166 runs. Haverty went on to make 81 (144 balls), while Tomlinson top scored with 140 from 186 balls (14 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Port Elliot used eight bowlers with skipper Joel Harris taking 4/72 from 14 overs, including three wickets in five balls.

McLaren Districts have already wrapped up first innings points in their game at Willunga after bowling the home side out for just 59. Sebastian Carius (20) was the only Demons batsman to reach 20 as his side were bowled out in just 25 overs. Five Crushers bowlers took wickets including David Fitzgerald (3/8), Daniel Hoskin (3/22) and Roy Graham (2/2). McLaren Districts lost four wickets before knocking off the target as they finished on 8/142 at stumps, a lead of 83 runs. Justin Twartz (33 not out), Stephen Nairn (25) and George Beard (23) were the leading run scorers for McLaren Districts, while Malcolm Radford (3/31) and Dan Hockham (2/12) were the best of the Demons bowlers.

Mount Compass are in a good position at stumps on day one of their clash with the Vipers at Victor Harbor after posting a competitive total of 214 before being bowled out in the 69th over. Josh Murfitt dominated the first part of the Bulls innings as he made 88 from 96 balls (15 x 4’s) before being dismissed with the score at 3/112. Steady wickets continued to fall until Robert Martin joined his skipper Aaron Dalitz (19) at the crease. This pair added 61 runs for the ninth wicket before Martin went for a hard-hitting 44 from 35 balls (2 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s). Off-spinner Luke Harding opened the bowling for 'Victor' and took 4/46 from a marathon 24 overs, while Vipers skipper Sean Medlen snared 3/35 (18). Josh Boyko got the final two wickets to finish with 2/1 (1.2).

The match between third-placed Goolwa and top-of-the-ladder Noarlunga is evenly poised after day one of their clash at Old Noarlunga Oval. The Magpies were in early trouble at 2/19 as Jamie Diener (2/20) picked up the first two wickets for the Shoes. Matt Overall (38) and Jesse Le Ray (29) then added 60 runs for the third wicket. Once these two were dismissed, Goolwa were 4/83 before Jack Ward (18) and Vic Robertson put on 60 for the fifth wicket as the Magpies posted 7/187 from their 70 overs. Robertson top scored with 66 (92 balls) before being run out.
