Alexandrina Council has started work on the concept design for its section of the Encounter Bikeway.
Council representatives, architects and engineers have conducted a full site walkover on the existing route of the bikeway to assess concept design delivery, standards compliance and engineering/construction requirements.
It required a condition audit to assess compliance and identify opportunities to improve the popular bikeway for users.
Investigating potential realignment of the bikeway in sections will be undertaken to improve user safety and experience.
The bikeway is approximately 21.5km long and the section under review and consideration for upgrade starts at Laffins Point in Goolwa North and ends at Seagull Avenue, Chiton.
This runs from the intersection of Liverpool Road and Howell Street to the Alexandrina Council boundary with City of Victor Harbor.
The proposed routes for Seagull Avenue are in alignment with City of Victor Harbor’s bikeway review and feedback study.
The councils are also considering alternative routes and locations to improve user safety.
They have collected vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian data from 12 locations along the bikeway to assist in identifying current behaviour of users, numbers and accessibility.
Delivery of the final documentation is expected in August following a 4 week period of community engagement from late May to early June.
Within this period, two public open days will be held to gather more information and provide feedback.
Following this the draft concept plans will be available on the Alexandrina Council website.
A survey questionnaire will be available seeking community feedback on the proposed changes via the MySay portal, or by written submission.
