Farmers’ market enters the hall of fame

The state’s first farmers’ market - Willunga - is celebrating its third consecutive win in the South Australian Tourism Awards for Excellence in Food Tourism.

The win elevates the market into the Hall of Fame and off to represent the state at the national awards in March 2022.

Accepting the award on behalf of the market, General Manager Jenni Mitton thanked staff, volunteers, and the passionate farmers for their efforts in providing an exceptional experience for shoppers throughout the pandemic.

Now in its 20th year of operation, the Willunga Farmers Market is home to more than 70 farmers and producers from the Fleurieu Peninsula who trade every Saturday, year-round from 8am until 12noon.

An authentic farmers market, customers can m eet the grower and taste the region with fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, diary, olive oil, seafood, baked goods and more – all grown, reared, or baked on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The market also offers a great destination for breakfast or brunch with coffee stalls, cold press juice and more.

Shoppers can even sample local wine from the McLaren Vale wine region, craft beer and gin.

“What a fabulous experience!” said tourism awards Judge Andrew Baggaley, “from the pre-arrival review to the initial meet and greet and through to the abundant shopping, it was a faultless experience.

“Best of all, the interaction with the stallholders outstanding. Obviously, they did not know me, but every stall holder tolerated my Q&A with enthusiasm, gusto, and passion.”

The market is held in the grounds of the Willunga High School. As Christmas and New Year fall on a Saturday this year, special twilight markets will be held on Thursday 23 and 30 December – 4pm to 7pm.
