Farmers’ market in national top five

Willunga Farmers’ Market has made the national top five finalist list in the 2021 delicious. Harvey Norman Produce Awards announced last week.

South Australia was the only state to boast more than one market on the closely fought list, with Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market also in the running.

The other national finalists are Victoria’s Alphington Farmers’ Market, Tasmania’s Harvest Launceston Community Farmers’ Market and Kiama Farmers’ Market in New South Wales.

Farmers markets have reported a surge in attendance during 2021 as more South Australians chose to buy local and shop in the fresh air during the pandemic.

They says the markets also provided a lifeline for many small local food businesses when restaurants shut down during COVID.

Both markets are hoping for a South Australian winner when the trophy is handed out in August.

Many of the same stall holders trade at Willunga Farmers’ Market on Saturday and Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market on Sunday, providing a vital stream of direct sales to local growers, bakers and other artisan food producers.

Willunga Farmers’ Market is located in the heart of Willunga in Town Square and opens Saturday 8am to 12pm.

Full details of both markets are available on the Willunga Farmers’ Market website and the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market website.
