The markets of the Fleurieu are among its boundless attractions; arts and crafts, plants and produce provide a regular weekend activity and showcase the region.

Like everything else in life, the Fleurieu’s many marvellous markets have been affected by Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings, causing many to close until further notice.

Among those to close include the Myponga Markets on Main South Road; the Rotary markets at Goolwa Wharf and Lakala Reserve in Port Elliot; Victor Harbor Beachside Market on the Esplanade and Urimbirra markets; Victor Harbor Artisan markets on Warland Reserve; the Strathalbyn market on South Terrace; and the Willunga Quarry Market.

The good news is that farmers’ markets have been deemed essential services and both Willunga and Victor Harbor farmers’ markets remain open to supply fresh local produce direct from producers.

The markets, which both operate on Saturdays from 8am to 12.30pm, have spaced stalls further apart and have instituted social distancing and hygiene conventions in line with government requirements.

Victor Farmers’ Market chair Neil Hosking says he has put up multiple signs as reminders and that most people were observing social distancing.

“Last Saturday the police parked at both ends of the market, observed and walked through. On the whole it was very orderly.”

“We have decided not to host buskers at the market until life gets back to normal and its ok for us to be a social hub again, as well as a source of fresh local food.”

Neil says the market has suspended stallholder fees to help out its local producers and the council has waived the market’s licence fee from 1 March to 30 June.
