Festival Fleurieu 2021 commenced on Saturday April 3rd in the seaside township of Normanville on the Fleurieu Peninsula, kick starting the14 day Festival across the district.
The Opening Event, Carnival Fleurieu, was held on the Normanville green space, in the centre of the township. The popular event attracted close to 2,500 people across the day. The day got underway with a wonderful cultural greeting by Karl Telfer and his family, with the sounds of the didgeridoo echoing across the township.
The day featured live music from a range of both local and Adelaide based performers entertaining the crowds throughout the event. The Borderers, featured in the photograph, were a hit with kids and adults alike. The African Soul drummers were also very popular and there were plenty of takers when they invited the crowd to join in with the drumming. A number of local groups were featured including the Festival Fleurieu Choir, The Terribly Loud Choir, Yankulele, the Rock and Roll Dancers and the Line Dancers. Many of the local groups meet regularly across the district and are always a highlight at events like this one.
The Normanville Farmers market was on right next to the green and this added to the excitement and great sense of community throughout the day.
Desmond Ford, Board Chairperson stated, “We couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the Festival – the weather was perfect, the crowds were steady all day and all of the performers were warmly received”.
Ford also stated, “We had put in place all of the Covid protocols and people were very responsible in following the required directions to ensure a safe event for all”.
The Festival runs until Saturday April 17th.
