Finals around the corner in the Great Southern Football Women's competition

Willunga and McLaren Districts did battle in a classic encounter as the minor round wrapped up in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition. The two teams will clash again in the Qualifying Final next Sunday for a spot in the 2023 decider. On Friday night, Willunga came from 16 points down at halftime to triumph 4.7 (31) to 4.5 (29). It was the reigning premiers 10th consecutive win, with their only loss coming at the hands of McLaren Districts back in round four. Best players for the Demons were Ruby Thomas, Lauren Clifton, Tessa Kohn, Katrice Turner and Ada Anninos. McLaren Districts were best served by Sam Pratt, Ally Bailey, Gwen Humphreys, Katrina Munzberg and Emily Rowe, while Kiahni Russell kicked two goals for the Eagles.


Goolwa/Port Elliot warmed up for finals action with a comfortable 36-point win against Myponga-Sellicks. The Magpies won every quarter on their way to a 6.6 (42) to 1.0 (6) triumph. Indi Miller kicked two goals for Goolwa/Port Elliot, while Meesha Parsons kicked the only goal for the Mudlarks. Best players for Goolwa/Port Elliot, who finished third on the ladder, included Tayla Hoad, Bridget Lindsay, Miller, Kalani Bates and Ellie Fry. The Mudlarks’ best were Nari Wright, Courtney Gum, Imogen Harney, Charlie Shaw-McMillan and Kailey Webb.


Yankalilla/Encounter Bay finished the minor round in style today with a 75-point win against Victor Harbor at Yankalilla. The merged team, in their first season, will face off against Goolwa/Port Elliot in the Elimination Final next week. The Stingrays led by 37 points at halftime, before kicking another six goals in the second half to win 11.9 (75) to 0.0 (0). Dakota Oniszk kicked five goals for the Stingrays, white Erin Smith and Annabella Walden kicked two goals each. Best players for Yankalilla/Encounter Bay included Kimberley Rowe, Georgia Weatherspoon, Oniszk, Jemma Ellis and Jaimi Griffen. Skye Kartinyeri-Sumner was named best for the ‘Roos and she was well supported by Jasmine Bailey, Lucy Rubie, Tegan Yeomans and Lily Baxter.
