Firefighters on high alertAct now to be bushfire ready.

South Australian fire authorities are gearing up for a challenging festive season, as hot temperatures, strong winds, and dry conditions combine to elevate the fire risk across the state this Christmas.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for heightened fire danger on Christmas Day and Proclamation Day, prompting the Country Fire Service (CFS) and Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) to urge residents to take precautions seriously.

CFS Chief Officer Brett Loughlin, AFSM, acknowledged the commitment of South Australia’s 13,500 volunteer firefighters, who stand ready to protect communities during this critical period.

“Even at this highly festive time of year, South Australia’s volunteer firefighters are prepared to serve and ensure the community’s safety,” he said. “We’re facing high-risk conditions across the state, and we ask everyone to act responsibly and avoid activities that could spark fires.”

Loughlin emphasized the importance of integrating fire safety into holiday plans. “All South Australians should ensure their bushfire survival plans account for Christmas celebrations, including any travel or visitors to your home,” he says.

MFS Chief Officer Jeff Swann urged caution when using outdoor cooking equipment, especially barbecues, during the Fire Danger Season.

“On Total Fire Ban Days, you may need to adjust your plans for outdoor cooking,” Swann says. “Check the CFS website to review the rules that apply on these days.”

Swann advised inspecting gas cylinders, hoses, and connections before use, as worn equipment could lead to dangerous accidents. He also recommended keeping barbecues at least four meters away from flammable materials, particularly in peri-urban areas where dry grass and vegetation are close to homes.

“A small spark can easily turn into a devastating fire,” he warned. “Taking a few precautions can make all the difference.”

South Australians are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the rules and restrictions during the Fire Danger Season and Total Fire Ban Days by visiting the CFS website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au.

As families come together to celebrate, authorities are calling on everyone to remain vigilant, prioritise safety, and help ensure a fire-free Christmas season.
