The south end of Victor Harbor’s Ocean Street will close to traffic for almost five months as construction ramps up on stage four of the Main Street redevelopment.
Stage Four aims to revitalise this end of Ocean Street and Albert Place with wider footpaths, increased alfresco dining opportunities, public seating, public art, more street trees and garden beds.
Preliminary work has already started, affecting traffic to Railway Parade, Albert Place and The Esplanade for the rest of June.
Albert Place will close to traffic from 20 June to mid-September, while Ocean Street will close from 27 June to mid-November.
The construction plans remain subject to weather, so a wet winter could extend the closure.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the construction period, but there will be no parking permitted in work zones and no vehicle traffic in work zones, with the exception of some delivery vehicles.
The council surveyed affected businesses in the area and as a result chose the winter-spring closure as the least-worst option.
Full details of road closures can be found on the City of Victor Harbor website, along with information on car parking options during the construction period.
Stage One of the City of Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade – the intersection of Ocean Street and Coral Street - was completed in 2016.
Stage Two – the north end of Ocean Street – was completed in 2019; and Stage Three – Coral Street from Ocean Street to the foreshore - in 2020.
Stage Five – Grosvenor Gardens and the Coral Street Arts Centre - has been put on hold following community feedback on the initial plans.
