Flagstaff Hill upset Cove in SFLW action

Flagstaff Hill moved into the top four of the Southern Football League Women’s (SFLW) competition after an upset 25-point win over reigning premier Cove on Sunday. The Falcons got away to a good start on their home deck as they took a handy 15-point lead into the halftime break. A further two goals in the third term saw Flaggies out to a match-winning 27-point lead. Cove kicked the only goal of the final quarter as Flagstaff Hill ran out winners 5.8 (38) to 2.1 (13). Soriah Moon kicked two goals for the Falcons with Hannah Griffin, Moon, Alana Baker, Emily Brockhurst and Tamsyn Morriss named as best players. Dana O’Brien, Jaime Norup, Layla Dungey, Alana Tuohy-Lashmar and Jahna Perry were best for the Cobras.


Morphett Vale won their second game for 2020 with a 74-point victory over Hackham. The Emus led by 13 points at quarter time, 34 points at halftime, 53 points at three quarter time before winning 12.10 (82) to 1.2 (8). Kate Dunn kicked seven goals (13 for the season) for Morphett Vale and Katelyn Wilson kicked two. Kirsty Watson kicked the only goal for Hackham. Wilson, Dunn, Emma Morrison, Hannah Armstrong and Jordan Ross were best for the Emus while for the Hawks, Chelsea Deeth continued her excellent season to be named best player and she was supported by Alana Browne, Sam Smith, Belinda Macrow and Courtnie Noble.


In one of the matches of the season, Christies Beach defeated Reynella by 15 points to remain undefeated and top of the SFLW ladder after five rounds. Christies led by just three points at quarter time before kicking two goals to one in the second term to take a handy 12-point lead into the long break. Reynella came roaring back into the game in the third term, kicking three goals to one to reduce the margin to a solitary point heading into the final quarter. With the home crowd behind them, the Saints steadied to kick two unanswered goals in the final stanza to win 6.11 (47) to 5.2 (32). Kelly Armstrong was the only multiple goalkicker for the game as she slotted two majors for Christies Beach. Tayla Weinert, Armstrong, Candice De Laine, Tamara Page and Angelique Dean were named as best players for the Saints while Lauren Fisher, Shanique West, Anja Bencevic, Zannah Loxton and Emma James battled hard for Reynella.
