Support Local News: The Fleurieu App Joins the #OurNewsYourVoice Campaign

From June 3-7, the Fleurieu App will participate in Australia's first nationwide fundraiser for local news, the #OurNewsYourVoice campaign. This initiative, organized by the Local and Independent News Association (LINA), aims to support local publications across the country, including those in the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island regions.

Earlier this month, the owner and editor of the Fleurieu App, Susie Williams, attended LINA's annual conference in Port Douglas. Federal Communications Minister Michelle Rowland’s opening address, where she praised the contributions of independent media.

Despite the recognition, LINA’s executive director, Claire Stuchbery, pointed out in her May newsletter that the recent Commonwealth Budget did not allocate direct funding for news publishers. This omission is a setback for the many small, independent publications that emerged to fill the gaps left by mainstream media closures during the pandemic.

"Meeting fellow independent publishers at the conference was both inspiring and invigorating" says Susie.

The event highlighted the shared passion and dedication of independent news outlets, which often operate with minimal resources and high risk of burnout.

From June 3-7, the Fleurieu App will join 34 other Australian publications in the #OurNewsYourVoice campaign, seeking reader support to keep local news thriving. Donations will help the Fleurieu App continue to provide a vital community platform, supporting local businesses, and ensuring free access to news for all residents.

As a founding member of LINA, the Fleurieu App encourages support for local independent publications. Contributions, whether through donations or advertising, are crucial for sustaining the important work of these community-focused news outlets.

Look out for the #OurNewsYourVoice campaign launch on June 3 and help ensure the continued success of local news.
