Hindmarsh Valley’s Rochfort Distillery has added another prestigious award to its haul of international and Australian accolades, winning gold at the world’s Luxury Masters Asia 2019 competition in Hong Kong.
The gong went to Rochfort’s Single Malt Whisky Maxwell Mead Cask, considered by a panel of spirit specialists as the best whisky in the world aged 12 years and under.
It’s an outstanding achievement for the family-owned distillery, with patriarch Christopher Rochfort deflecting praise to South Australia, in particular the Fleurieu, saying it, “delivers the best ingredients in the world to make whisky”.
The distillery sources malt barley from selected farms in the mid north and south east, and water from springs that percolate through limestone in the Mount Lofty Ranges. Pedigree wine producers from the Fleurieu such as Geoff Hardy, Chapel Hill and Maxwells supply barrels, another key element of top shelf whisky.
The overarching element of Rochfort’s stable of spirits is South Australian’s Mediterranean climate.
“We have cool winters and warm summers, as well as cool nights and warm days, so these fluctuating temperatures cause the aging whisky to expand and contract, extracting flavours from the oak barrels and the surrounding environment,” Christopher explains.
“For us it’s all about provenance and recognising the unique assets we have in South Australia.”
In the hands of expert distillers, sons Lachlan and John, these elements have established Rochfort as a super-premium brand on the global circuit as well as providing a rewarding experience for cellar door visitors.
Producing whisky of distinction is Rochfort’s passion.
“We’re proud to be turning heads and challenging the understanding of single malt whisky maturation, and the team at the distillery is thrilled with the results,” says distiller and brand ambassador John Rochfort.
“Thank you to all those who have given us encouragement and support over the years; without you all none of this would be possible. And lastly a shout out to all our suppliers from barley to barrels we really are blessed to be working with the best in the world. Thank you.”
